This major exhibition is based on certain idées-forces which, as the itinerary unfolds, are gradually developed and linked together via works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo collection—one of Europe’s most important collections focused on the art of recent decades—in the two main exhibition spaces at the CAAC: the Monument Zone and the North Cloister. These ideas oscillate amid assorted nuances derived from the different possible definitions of six words: strange, extraordinary, extravagant, eccentric, exotic and foreigner. On this unique occasion, the perceived strangeness of the world’s current course converges with the exceptionalness of contemporary art as a potential framework of thought and experimentation.

In recent years, a feeling of estrangement, of alienation verging on incredulity, has taken over our lives. The global pandemic and the war in Ukraine have accelerated a course that seems to be spiralling into darkness. Guy Debord previously spoke of an exit-less present that turns in the night. The monsters of reason linked to the human condition are waking the serpent. Contemporary art, as an uncommon language that plays with the unknown and the unfamiliar, can provide spectators with a means of materializing what we sense but cannot fully grasp. This allows us to discover other forms and other mentalities which, though foreign to us, speak of the times in which we live.

This presentation of works by 30 international artists, predominantly women, is part of an ambitious institutional project organized by the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo and Museo Patio Herreriano, which are hosting an unprecedented display of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo collection to commemorate its thirtieth anniversary in two different simultaneous exhibitions.
